Stevens Institute of Technology will dedicate The Lore-El Center, a new educational and residential center for young women pursuing so-called non-traditional careers in engineering and the sciences, on Jan. 13, at 11:00 a.m. at 802 Castle Point Terrace, between Eighth and Ninth Streets in Hoboken, on the universitys campus.
The Center, which will offer meeting facilities and residential rooms in the same building for Stevens students, will be named in honor of Miss Lore E. Feiler, a trailblazing New Jersey businesswoman who ran her own manufacturing company, the Lor-El Corporation, in the 1940s. Feiler also worked for the Arrow Manufacturing Company from 1937 - 1951, as the Plant Production Manager. During that time, she audited courses at Stevens and learned the basics of mechanical engineering, finance and business management allowing her to expand her own business during the post-war years.
While the Center will serve primarily undergraduate and graduate women at Stevens, all members of the universitys community will be invited to participate in different aspects of the Centers activities. Some of these new activities will include: professional mentoring programs pairing Stevens alumnae and other professionals with undergraduate and graduate women either person-to-person, or electronically. The Center will also conduct seminar series focused on professional and personal development.
