HOBOKEN, N.J. On Nov. 18, 1999, friends and family bid farewell to entrepreneur and well-known New Jersey business leader Charles V. Schaefer Jr. On Feb. 10, they will celebrate his life and work by awarding Henry Shotmeyer Sr., chief executive officer of Shotmeyer Bros. Company, the first-ever entrepreneur award presented by Stevens Institute of Technology. Shotmeyer lives in Franklin Lakes, N.J., and the company is based in Hawthorne, N.J.
Shotmeyer will receive the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. Entrepreneur Award during a celebration of Schaefers life at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, in the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. Athletic and Recreation Center, on Stevens central campus.
Schaefer dedicated his life to his family, church, business and his alma mater. Stevens is pleased to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of this special alumnus with a memorial program and award. Shotmeyer was chosen as the first recipient for the award for his success as an entrepreneur in the petroleum industry and his contributions to his community.
Shotmeyer, now 95 years old, came to the United States from Holland in 1925 with his parents and brother, Albert. The brothers bought and ran a service station in Hawthorne, N.J., and relied on strong customer service to make up for what they lacked financially. It paid off. After five years, the Shotmeyers became exclusive petroleum distributors in northern New Jersey for Getty Oil Corp. with multiple stations. In 1994, Mobil Oil recognized the Shotmeyers as the fuel companys oldest distributor in the United States. In addition to their booming business, the Shotmeyer brothers offered support to many community projects and charitable organizations.
