HOBOKEN, N.J. A senior at Stevens Institute of Technology recently was selected for the honorable mention list for USA Today newspapers "All-USA College Academic Team."
Michael Quinn, of East Hanover, N.J., was one of five students nominated for the team by Stevens. He was the only student from New Jersey who earned a place in USA Todays 40-member honorable mention list. Quinn is the son of Thomas and Dolores Quinn of East Hanover.
Nominees for the All-USA Academic Team were outstanding full-time undergraduate students from across the nation. Twenty nominees were selected for the academic team itself, which was publicized in the newspaper Feb. 17.
This semester, Quinn is completing both his bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering, earning both degrees in five years an outstanding achievement in itself. Remarkably, he also has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average and has been involved with cooperative education, which automatically extends a students study duration.
As part of the nomination process, he submitted information to USA Today judges about his recent honors and awards, various activities on campus and in the community, and internships and research. He also wrote an essay about how he recently created a complex welding design process during his work as a cooperative education student at Ashland Chemical Company.
Quinn has been awarded two highly competitive academic scholarships: The New York Rubber Group Scholarship and the North Jersey Section American Society of Mechanical Engineers Scholarship. In 1996, he received Stevens top academic achievement award for sophomores and juniors in the mechanical engineering curriculum.
He is a member of Chi Phi Fraternity at Stevens and the national engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi, among his many activities. In 1998, he worked on a research project for Los Alamos National Laboratories under a professors guidance at Stevens.
