HOBOKEN, N.J. ― Stevens Institute of Technology is holding the first Internal Workshop on Cognition-Centric Systems on November 17, 2009 in response to an industry-sponsored initiative to learn more about how adaptive systems can be incorporated into the forefront of technology and engineering research.
The ability of a complex system to adjust both allocation of resources and production output to the needs of its environment is critical to the sustainability and long-term value of an enterprise. An evolved system is able to adapt and react to its environment and make the appropriate changes - it becomes truly a "thinking" system. The capabilities that allow a system to sense changes in its environment, and then adapt accordingly, comprise its "cognitive" ability.
The Internal Workshop on Cognition-Centric Systems at Stevens is aimed at mapping the terrain for Cognition Centric Systems Engineering through a multi-disciplinary perspective. The workshop will be limited to Stevens faculty and interested industry representatives. Participants have been selected based on their expertise in the various disciplines of critical importance to the development of the field and will present research ideas on how to take significant steps towards cognition centric systems.
The perspectives presented will include:
During the workshop the participants will collectively outline a research agenda for cognition-centric system and identify the top experts worldwide who should be invited for a global-level follow-up roundtable on the subject as a track within the Conference on Systems Engineering Research , held at Stevens March 17-19, 2010. The strategic goal of this workshop is to position Stevens as a global thought leader in the field of cognition-centric systems and to explore critical collaboration potentials among Stevens faculty on various aspects of the problem.
