Dr. Rajarathnam Chandramouli, a new faculty member at Stevens Institute of Technology, is a co-investigator for a $498,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant is given as part of the NSF's new Information Technology Research (ITR) initiative. Charged with granting $90 million in awards, the ITR's board reviewed more than 1,400 proposals before dividing the monies among just 200 applicants.
Chandramouli will be working with colleagues from Stevens' Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and from Pennsylvania State University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Dr. Mary Jane Irwin, who is the Principal Investigator, will head the Penn State team.
The winning proposal is titled Collaborative Research: Optimization and Integrated Control of Low Power Wireless Multimedia Networks.
"The project deals with developing wireless networking protocols that minimize the amount of battery power usage for mobile communication and computing devices," says Chandramouli. "The focus is on attacking power-hungry multimedia applications such as wireless videoconferencing, accessing large image/video databases, and so on, to greatly increase efficiency and capacity."
The research has obvious large implications for the cellular, palmtop, and other popular wireless communications technology now in use by a growing number of businesses and consumers.
Chandramouli arrrived at Stevens in the fall of 2000 to take up a post as an assistant professor. A native of Chennai, India, he holds a doctorate (1999) in computer science and engineering from the University of South Florida at Tampa. He also earned his master's in Mathematics at USF, Tampa, in 1999. In addition, he has a master's degree in electrical communications engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Madras, Chennai, India.
Dr. Chandramouli also serves as an associate editor for the journal IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology.
