Lyric Orchestra presents Rigoletto in concert at DeBaun Auditorium
Fresh from its sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, The Lyric Orchestra next performs Guiseppe Verdi's inspired opera Rigoletto in concert March 10 at Stevens Institute of Technology. (See full details, below.)
"This is a concert performance of the full opera, with all of its well-known arias and its rare, sustained intensity," says Maestro Franco Bertacci. "While this is not a staged performance with costumes and sets, this concert version allows the audience to experience the remarkable power of this opera's music in a lively, intimate setting."
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Rigoletto, which was staged for the first time in Venice in 1851. Verdi is reported to have completed the opera in 40 days at the very pinnacle of his career. The dramatic three-act opera is based on Victor Hugo's brilliant attack on the French court and tells the story of a court jester, Rigoletto, who hides his beautiful daughter from public view. Rigoletto's master, the duke, captures her, and Rigoletto seeks revenge.
Singers for this concert production include several young artists making their debuts as well as some of the area's finest familiar operatic voices.
The 45-member Lyric Orchestra, conducted by Bertacci, brings together extraordinarily talented young musicians (average age 25) from more than a dozen countries. Its players, selected by audition, include an impressive variety of top students and recent graduates from The Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and other renowned conservatories worldwide. Guest artists and soloists from the region are also regularly featured.
The Hoboken-based orchestra performs its regular season at Stevens' elegant DeBaun Auditorium, the recent winner of a statewide award for historic preservation. The auditorium is conveniently located about six blocks north of Hoboken's historic transit terminal, with service from New York and New Jersey.
