Stevens seniors win NJ Pharmaceutical Engineers Society design competition; will compete nationally

logoHOBOKEN, N.J. - In early April, five seniors from Stevens Institute of Technology won a design competition in the annual Student Poster Contest held at the New Jersey Chapter meeting of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers (ISPE). The winning Stevens team will be privileged to present their project, "Remotely Operated Stitching Devices for Secure Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms," at the ISPE annual international fall conference held in San Antonio, Texas.

The ISPE Student Chapter Advisor is Dr. Richard Berkof, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Engineering Program in Stevens' Schaefer School of Engineering.

"All student teams made excellent presentations to the NJ Chapter of the ISPE," said Berkof. "Special congratulations to our Stevens seniors who made the winning presentation."

The team consisted of five students: Rebecca Gonter and Joseph Grogan, who made the winning presentation on behalf of the team, which also included Eva Bica, George Collard and Dominique Gonzalez. The presentation was based on the team's Senior Design Project, a mechanical design and medical device project whose advisor is Professor Zhenqi Zhu of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

A representative of the team will travel this fall to the ISPE 2004 Annual conference to present the winning New Jersey project, October 24-28, at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, San Antonio, Texas.

About the ISPE New Jersey Chapter
The New Jersey Chapter of the ISPE was established in the mid 1980s to support the large concentration of pharmaceutical manufacturers located within the metropolitan region. Now entering its nineteenth year, the chapter looks proudly at a number of innovative programs created locally that are institutionalized as international ISPE programming; these include Expanded Education, Student Chapters and Vendor Night.

The New Jersey Chapter remains one of the largest chapters in the ISPE organization by serving the education, information and networking needs of the local pharmaceutical community. Monthly programming, newsletters and special interest groups provide regular opportunities for contact with other industry professionals.
