Classroom impact of Stevens-Hoboken Partnership to be celebrated at Stevens, Sept. 22

HOBOKEN, N.J. — The impact on teachers and students of a three-year, intensive partnership between the Stevens Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) and the Hoboken Board of Education will be discussed and celebrated this Wednesday, beginning with a reception at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. The event will take place in the 4th Floor Bissinger Room at the Wesley J. Howe Center, one block east of Castle Point Terrace and 8th Street in Hoboken. CIESE is an internationally renowned R&D center located at Stevens, dedicated to the advancement of K-12 education in science and mathematics through the use of novel technologies. Hoboken Mayor Dave Roberts and Schools Superintendent Patrick Gagliardi will speak to the impact of teacher training in the use of technology resulting from several ongoing collaborations between CIESE and Hoboken Public Schools. Stevens President Dr. Harold J. Raveche will make opening remarks citing the inherent value of Stevens’ involvement in the Hoboken-Stevens Partnership for Education, and restating the university’s commitment to continue and expand educational outreach to the local community.

CIESE Director Beth McGrath will provide an overview of ongoing joint programs, including the Hoboken Summer Institutes for teacher training and the Star-W Program, whose goal is to integrate technology into Grades 3-5 curriculum combined with instruction that leads to increased student performance in language arts literacy.

McGrath will also unveil a new community program designed to engage middle school students, called The First Day of College, which will launch with the participation of Sixth Grade students from the Brandt and Demarest Schools, in partnership with Stevens fraternities Alpha Phi Omega, Tau Beta Pi, Chi Alpha Epsilon, and the Stevens Technical Enrichment Program (STEP). The program will introduce the sixth-graders to a day in the life of a student at Stevens Institute, giving them a first-hand experience of education at a science and technology university.

Following remarks by Mayor Roberts, three teachers who have participated in CIESE training programs will each give a short demonstration of how they have implemented CIESE Internet-based teaching techniques into the curricula, discussing resultant improvement in student enthusiasm and performance. The teachers will be Fiona Duncanson, Hoboken High School, English teacher; Cara Killen, Wallace School, 5th grade; and Maureen Kecmer, Wallace School, 4th grade.

Following Superintendent Gagliardi’s remarks regarding Hoboken Public School accomplishments and plans, Ms. Joyce Baron will provide an overview of the International Baccalaureate Program, high school implementation and middle years program plans.

The HSPE event will conclude at 5:30 p.m.
