Stevens’ Project Management graduate degree programs receive accreditation

HOBOKEN, N.J. — The Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading not-for-profit professional association for project management, and The Global Accreditation Center for Project Management (GAC), have jointly announced the accreditation of specialty graduate degree programs in project management at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Founded in 1870 in Hoboken, New Jersey, Stevens Institute has been a pioneer in technical education and a highly acclaimed center for study and research. Recent education surveys have ranked Stevens as 11th among the top 550 colleges and universities which have produced presidents, vice presidents and directors of U.S. companies in proportion to their number of graduates.

The Project Management Program at Stevens was initially established within the Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management in 1997 with a single course offering that quickly evolved into four-course certificate program and, finally, into a full fledged masters degree program. The specific Stevens Institute programs that have been accredited by GAC include MBA, MSM, MSTM, and MSIS degrees all with concentrations in project management. The MSTM program is administered jointly by both the Howe School and the Charles V. Schaefer Jr. School of Engineering at Stevens.

According to Jerry MacArthur Hultin, Dean of the Howe School at Stevens, project management is a fundamental part of their graduate curriculum. Said Hultin, “Technology management, which is at the core of what we teach at Stevens, and project management are completely complimentary in terms of how to get things done, starting with a strategic viewpoint and moving closer to the details during execution.”

To achieve the GAC Accreditation, Stevens underwent a very rigorous peer evaluation process to demonstrate compliance with Accreditation Standards found in the GAC handbook of Accreditation of Degree Programs in Project Management. According to GAC chair James Joyner, Director of the Project Management Program at the University of Texas, Dallas, “The overall mission of the Board is to advance the project management profession by providing academic institutions and providers of professional development training an opportunity to have their programs reviewed against a set of professional outcomes.

Dean Hultin of Stevens agrees and said, “The GAC accreditation process significantly enhanced the scope of the project management graduate program at our school and affords Stevens the unique status of being one of only three such institutions in the world to receive recognition. GAC’s Joyner is confident that the experience at Stevens in completing the accreditation process will be an incentive for many of the more 90 other educational institutions that offer programs in project management. “The major advantage of being accredited is that the process itself provides programs with important information, and when the accreditation or approval standards are met, the prestige of having passed a rigid inspection will be obvious.
