Savvy Cyber Teacher Summer Institute at Stevens, July 2005

Registration is under way for training in effective K-12 Internet education

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology will once again offer to teachers of K-12 math and science the Savvy Cyber Teacher Summer Institute, a week-long immersion program in how to effectively integrate the Internet and the latest in online curricula into the pre-college classroom.

For teachers in grades 9-12, the program is offered July 11-15; for grades K-5 and 6-8, the program will be offered July 25-29. All instruction takes place on the Stevens campus in Hoboken, overlooking the beautiful Manhattan skyline. To register online, please visit www.savvycyberteacher.org.

Savvy Cyber Teacher® is a 30-hour graduate-level course enabling teachers to use Internet-based resources to engage students in quantitative, inquiry-based science and mathematics projects in which they gather, download and analyze real-time and collaborative-based data in order to draw conclusions, discover scientific principles and, in effect, become real scientists.

" More than 8,000 teachers have participated in the Savvy Cyber Teacher® training," said Meg Turner, Manager of Outreach at CIESE. "Independent evaluations by Harcourt Assessment, Inc. and Educational Testing Service (ETS) have shown positive impact on students' science and mathematics achievement and teachers' skills and pedagogy.

" In a study of selected classrooms," she said, "eighty-six percent of students showed noteworthy gains on the science and mathematics learning objectives. In addition, teachers reported spending less time lecturing; being more comfortable with small group activities; using more cooperative learning techniques; feeling better prepared to teach for different learning styles; being better teachers of problem-solving; and feeling more competent at presenting complex materials.
