NASA’s Goddard Center NYC Research Summit – Stevens Institute of Technology, Aug. 12

Major academic, governmental agency groups join in events

HOBOKEN, N.J. — This year marks the third year of The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) New York City Research Initiative (NYCRI). (Please visit the website at education.gsfc.nasa.gov/nycri).

During the 2005 NYCRI Summer Research Institute, 24 teams of high school and college students and faculty have been assigned to work along side graduate students and the principal investigators of NASA-funded research projects at 12 universities within a 50-mile radius of New York City; and 6 research teams have been assigned to NASA scientists at The Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS).

As part of the NYCRI Summer Research Institute, an annual Research Summit is held. In 2004 the NYCRI Research Summit was held at Brookhaven National Laboratories. This summer the NYCRI is partnering with the NSF CUNY Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) to sponsor a 2005 Urban University Research Summit, which will be held 9:15 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., August 12, 2005, at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.

Stevens is the lead institution for NASA's New Jersey Space Grant Consortium. NASA, NSF, NOAA and DOD high school, undergraduate and graduate student and faculty researchers will participate in this research summit. The invited speakers for this event are Dr. Neil de Grasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium, Dr. Bernice Alston, NASA Deputy Chief Education Officer, and Mr. Dillard Menchan, NASA GSFC Deputy Education Officer.

Other participating Institutions of Higher Learning in the NYCRI events: New York Campuses - The City College of New York, Hunter College, LaGuardia Community College, Medgar Evers College, Queensborough Community College, New York City College of Technology, Polytechnic University and The State University of New York at Stony Brook; New Jersey Campuses – New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University; Connecticut Campus – Southern Connecticut State University).

NYCRI Partnerships include NASA GSFC/GISS (lead), NASA N.Y., N.J. and Conn. Space Grant Consortiums, NSF CUNY LSAMP, NYC Department of Education, NYS Department of Education, as well as informal education institutions, such as The American Museum of Natural History, Hayden Planetarium, Brookhaven National Laboratories, Wildlife Conservation Society, Liberty Science Center, and Intrepid Air and Space Museum.
