Perspectives on Classroom Technology: Stevens/Hoboken Schools Summer Institutes celebrated, Aug. 17

HOBOKEN, N.J. — For a fourth consecutive year, Stevens Institute of Technology’s Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE), in collaboration with the Hoboken Public School District, conducted a Summer Institute aimed at helping teachers and school administrators gain an in-depth understanding about how effectively to integrate, support, and utilize educational technology to increase student achievement and create 21st century learning environments.

Presentations by Hoboken school administrators will highlight a luncheon ceremony recognizing the partnership’s continued success and technology impact in the classroom, featuring statements from Hoboken Mayor Dave Roberts and Stevens President Harold J. Raveche, and will take place this Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 12 p.m., on the Stevens campus at the Wesley J. Howe Center, one block east of 8th Street and Castle Point Terrace. The Teachers’ Institute, offered during the week of August 8-12, focused on the effective use of Internet resources in K-12 classes and how to use Microsoft FrontPage to create websites designed to support the Hoboken Public Schools' educational goals. Teachers participated in hands-on sessions to explore and identify Internet resources that utilize real time data, global telecollaboration, publishing of student work and primary source material. These “unique and compelling” applications cannot be accomplished with textbooks or other print materials. The workshop reviewed Internet-based projects in science, mathematics, social studies and language arts across all grade levels.

The Administrator’s Institute, offered for the first time for Hoboken Public Schools participants from August 15-17, is providing Hoboken school and district administrators with an expanded perspective on the technology tools and resources to needed to adequately support their teachers and students in achieving rigorous standards, as well as hands-on exploration of a variety of productivity software, such as spreadsheets, word processing programs, and presentation programs, useful in their job and school settings.
