CIESE website named one of USA TODAY ’s ‘Best Bets’

Teachers can enhance their curriculum with CIESE’s interdisciplinary projects

HOBOKEN, N.J. — An online classroom project, “Historical Treasure Chests,” developed by the Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE) at Stevens Institute of Technology, has been selected as a “Best Bet” on the USA TODAY Education website for the week of March 3 to March 9, 2006. Each week the USA TODAY Education online staff selects three “Best Bet” sites featuring high quality educational content for its audience of subscribers and guests. Links to these sites are listed on the USA TODAY Education home page for a one-week period and are then archived with a brief description for search purposes.

“Historical Treasure Chests” (www.stevens.edu/ciese/curriculum/treasure/index.html) is an online project aimed at students and teachers of Grades 5-12. It engages students in using Internet-based primary source data, including historical documents such as birth certificates, maps, diaries, photographs, and other artifacts, to help them develop skills of critical analysis, oral and written communication, and use of technology for authentic tasks.

  • Fewer than 150 sites are selected each year as USA TODAY Education “Best Bet” websites. To view USA TODAY ’s “Best Bet” picks, visit its website at www.usatoday.com/educate/home.htm.

CIESE is Stevens’s primary K-12 outreach center and offers professional development for teachers in science, technology, pre-engineering, and mathematics for elementary through high school teachers. CIESE’s online classroom projects currently attract participation from more than 100,000 students from 35 countries around the world.
